Though we would not like natural disasters to be a part of our life, at times it could turn out to be wishful thinking only if you have prepared a survival kit. At the end of the day, we mortals are no match against the fury and anger of nature.
However, we have to be prepared for the worst situation to give us the best chance of survival. Being ‘prepared’ is just an understatement and we should know what exactly such preparation means. You always hear the quote:
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” – Benjamin Franklin
And this has never been truer in this day and age of fast paced technology changes and world wide chaos. The ones who prepare are the ones who will survive and when that disaster hits, whether it be earthquake, flood or riot, your forward thinking and disaster preparedness kit will be worth more than its weight in gold.
The next segments will help you understand and guide you through developing the best survival kit for any situation.
But lets get the basic right first…

While many disasters cannot be forecast in advance, the best we can do is to ensure that we are well prepared to survive the ordeal. The main objective should be to survive till such time help comes our way. There could be many instances where help might arrive only after a couple of days or even more. Under such situations, the main objective should be to survive and do all it takes to be alive till help arrives. Here are my 5 priorities to focus on, that could help a lot in surviving the upcoming challenges:
Priority 1 – Shelter And Warmth
This is perhaps the most important point that needs to be kept in mind when we are in a survival situation. We should be well prepared with some basic materials and supplies that will help us to stay warm and in good healthy before we are able to extricate ourselves from the situation.
Check out my basic list of survival supplies for shelter and warmth.
Staying warm in a home should not be a problem if we have a fireplace. All we need to find is some firewood or other such materials which can be lit to make us warm and comfortable. However, away from home, finding the right shelter could be a big challenge, and the difference between life and death.
If it happens to be a deep forest or uninhabited areas, we should try and find a covered area and stay put there. Staying dry and keeping warm can be hard but here is an example of how to build a shelter out of debris – http://www.wildwoodsurvival.com/survival/shelter/debrishut/jldebrishut.html
What is required for a Shelter?
- Complete protection from the elements
- Warm and dry without blankets etc
- Allow you to dry work
- Sense of security
Having 10-15m of paracord, a waterproof sheet, duct tape and good quality knife or machete are the basic emergency essentials one should have when preparing their kit.
Next is one of the most important is access to fire and other heating arrangements. They help not only in remaining warm but also keep away dangerous animals, insects and reptiles. If we are stuck in a winter storm and are cut off, staying warm and comfortable is all the more important.
2) Health And First Aid
Taking care of our health during such emergencies is also very important. Hence, whether we are in home or outdoors, it is very vital on our part to carry some common medicines that could be required for an emergency. Drugs like paracetamol, NSAIDs, anti-histamines, anti diarrhea drugs, electrolyte powder are few things which should always be with us.
3) Water And Food
Water and food without any doubt are important elements without which survival could become a big problem. Water is extremely crucial though there are instances where people have survived without water for around 21 days. Though a normal human being can survive for around 7 days without water, it is always better to be prepared with the right amount of water in such emergencies. Food is another item that should be available in readily consumable form.
Depending on body weight and physical makeup man can survive without food for even 40 days. When storing food for emergencies, it is important to ensure that they are frozen and readily eatable and do not aggravate thirst. They should be free from excess salt.
When we are outdoors and get lost because of various reasons, particularly when natural disasters strike, we should know where exactly we are. For this having the right navigation tools is very important. Simple things like a compass can be very helpful. Many watches today have this facility and it makes sense to carry this along. Signaling and reference may also be required to draw attention of rescue teams or even strangers. Towards this objective, simple tools like signaling mirrors can go a long way.
5) Multipurpose Tools & Materials
When stuck in a remote location apart from the food, water and other survival material, it is very important to also have the right survival tools and materials. The list is quite big, but there are some that are very crucial. Survival whistle is extremely useful and can help survivors to reach you much faster. For signaling purposes one can also use tarps. Survival knives are a must without which no outdoor trip should be started. Other items like Bandanas, duct tape and plastic bags are few items that could come in very handy.
Different Disaster Scenarios
Having the right earthquake checklist is very important. Amongst other things it should contain important names, addresses and telephone numbers. The next point to keep in mind is emergency earthquake supplies. These include water, survival kits and readily eatable food items.
Understanding and having some basic knowledge about earthquake safety is also very important. Following some standard safety guidelines that are available online could play a big role in saving lives and preventing serious injuries. Simple safety techniques like getting under the table, switching off main power supplies, not using lifts and stairs can come in very handy.
We should also take care to ensure that the best earthquake kits are readily available. These are nothing but simple items like water, food, medicines, torches, batteries and plastic bags just to name a few. We should be able to differentiate between earthquake kits for outdoors and earthquake kits for home. The former should have something more that what is needed for homes.
Last but not the least, care should be taken to ensure that these safety items are always in a state of readiness especially when residing in earthquake prone areas. This is because disaster might strike any moment and there will not much time to scramble and save our lives, leave alone looking for these survival kits. Hence, it is always better to be prepared before the event rather than doing it once it has happened. It might turn out to be a case of acting when the milk has been spilt.
The Most Likely Place To Have An Emergency: Your Car!
Car is something that is indispensable and in today’s modern life we spend considerable part of out time inside cars. However, we should realize that when an emergency occurs or when natural disasters strike, the car could be the worst sufferer. If you are inside it, you must without any doubt be sure that you have the right emergency kit at all times.
When we talk about the right car emergency kit there are quite a few things that must be kept in mind. For example emergency candles are a must. However, when lighting these candles we should be sure that no gas or petrol is leaking which could lead to fire accidents. Additionally it is also important to store some emergency supplies for car. These include torches, plastic bags, towels, drinking water, some common medicines like NSAIDs, paracetamol, etc.
Effort has to be taken to go in for the best emergency food. For example the food should be readily eatable and should be frozen so that it remains in good condition. It should be easily digestible and should not induce too much of thirst.
Having well thought out car safety kits is also something that should be on top of the agenda. It includes spare tires, spare batteries, emergency triangles, gallons, just to name a few. Additionally it is also important to have some common survival tools in case you get stuck in cars. These include survival knives, ropes, bags and other such items. In fact when choosing the right survival backpack when travelling in a car, we should be sure that we have covered all the points discussed above. A complete checklist will enable us to avoid mistakes and slippages.
Could You Survive 72 Hours With Just A Backpack?
What is the main purpose of a 72 hour kit? It is to help us survive and be in a healthy state of mind and body before help arrives. The problem is how we go about preparing this kit which also is referred to as Bug out bag. When preparing the same we should pay attention to a few very important things. They are emergency water, food and medicine. These are absolutely essential for survival. When we talk about eatables we should always prefer to go in for freeze dried food. This is because they stay fresh for a longer period of time and they are in ready to eat form. Hence, no cooking is required. It would always be better to go in for dried fruits and nuts or what is often referred to as mother-earth foods. They are very soft on our digestive systems and help us to remain free from hunger.
The next important fact is to have a well thought out first aid kit to help out in such situations. The list of things to keep could be quite long and here are a few important ones that could be kept in mind. Crepe bandages, plasters in different shapes and sizes, gauze dressings, scissors, disposal sterile gloves, safety pins, common medications such as anti-pyretic, anti-inflammation products, anti-diarrheal, are just a few examples. Last but not the last having the right survival tools as mentioned earlier is also a must.
Wilderness Survival Kit: The Minimum Requirements For When You Go Bush!
When you go deep inside forest or areas that are thick in foliage and bushes, you must go fully prepared. You can afford to take things for granted. Though eight out of ten times you could end up with a happy outing, you should be prepared for something untoward that might happen the two times. Surviving in the wild with the constant threat of wild animals, reptile and insect bites could certainly make you shiver. However, if you are reasonably well prepared you will be able to weather the storm so to say.
The list of things that you should carry with you is almost similar to other disaster management techniques and ideas. There is no doubt that carrying reasonably adequate quantities of emergency water is very important to say the least. You can survive without food but not having enough water could prove very costly. However, the water must be clean and potable.
Carrying some emergency survival food is also not a bad idea. This will help us to overcome hunger pangs because when we are in a trekking in woods and forest areas, we would be required to walk long distances which will certainly make us hungry. When we talk about food it is again important to opt only for ready to eat food and food that is light and easily digestible. They should be low on sodium content to prevent excess thirst. Insect bites are a common problem when traveling in dense bushes and woods. Insect repellants are a must. Hence having the right survival clothing is extremely important.
The type of clothing required would depend on the time that you plan to spend, the climatic conditions that you will be encountering, etc. You must at least have a change-over clothing if you plan to spend around three to four days. Anything beyond this should call for at least two pairs of clothing. You must pay attention to your legs and face so that they are well covered to prevent from insect bites, especially when sleeping.
Last but not the least the basic minimum survival tools like torches, compass, knives, first aid, box and signaling equipment should be always with you.
Whether Its An Apocalypse Survival Kit Or An Ammo Bag For Zombies, You Should Know How To Prepare For The Ultimate Showdown
Though the use of the term apocalypse might sound a bit far fetched and could be stretching things a bit too for, when you are away from the comfort of home in unchartered and possibly hostile terrains, you should not leave anything to chance. While hoping for the best you should be prepared for the worst. Being positive and being practical is something that you should master when you are on such exciting but risk-laden trips.
The importance of the right zombie survival kit will be felt only when it not there. Hence, you should not make this mistake because the price that you may have to pay could be very heavy. Water is the most important element which you must keep in mind while building such survival kits. The other items could be a big laundry wish list, but here are a few important items that should not be missed out.
They include a well stocked first aid kit, an easily digestible and ready to eat food kit, knives, ropes, plastic bags, torches, signaling equipment just to name a few. When you are planning for the right zombie or apocalypse survival kit you must ensure that you are able to survive at least for 72 hours within which time you should be able to get some help given the technologically advanced world in which we are living today.
